Why You Need an Account
You must have a BBC account to watch programs. The BBC uses this to personalize your experience. It tracks what you watch and lets you resume shows on different devices. You cannot skip this step. It allows you to add shows to your list and get recommendations based on what you like. The process takes only a few minutes. You do it once and usually stay signed in for a long time.
How to Sign In on Your TV
This is the most common way people watch. Typing a long email and password with a TV remote is frustrating and slow. The BBC knows this. They built a system that uses your phone or computer to do the heavy lifting.
Open the BBC iPlayer app on your television. You will see a prompt to sign in. Select the Sign In button. Your TV screen updates. It does not ask for your email yet. Instead it shows a unique activation code. This code is usually six or eight characters long. It combines letters and numbers.
Leave this screen open on your television. Do not exit the app.
Grab your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Open a web browser like Chrome or Safari. Go to the address bar at the top. Type in bbc.com/tvcode. Press enter.
You see a webpage asking for the code. Look at your TV screen again. Read the code displayed there. Type that exact code into the box on your phone or computer.
Press the button to submit.
If you are not already signed in on your browser the site asks you to sign in now. Enter your email address and password. If you do not have an account you select Register here. Follow the prompts to create one.
Once you sign in on your phone the system verifies the code. Your phone screen says success. Look back at your television. It updates automatically. You are now signed in. You see your profile and can start watching immediately.

Signing In on Web and Mobile
Using BBC iPlayer on a laptop or phone is simpler. You do not need a code.
Go to the BBC iPlayer website or open the mobile app. Look for the Sign In button. It is usually in the top corner. Click it. Enter your email and password. Click Sign In.
That is it. You have access.
Fixing Common Problems
Technology breaks sometimes. You type the code but nothing happens. Or the TV says something went wrong.
Check your internet connection first. Both your TV and your phone need active internet access. If your phone uses data and your TV uses Wi-Fi that works fine. They do not need to be on the same network.
Sometimes the code expires. These codes only last for a short time for security. If you wait too long the code stops working. Your TV will tell you the code is invalid. To fix this you simply generate a new one. Back out of the screen on your TV and select Sign In again. You get a fresh code. Use bbc.com/tvcode again with the new characters.
Make sure you type the URL correctly. It is bbc.com/tvcode. Do not put spaces. Do not search for it in Google search bar. Put it directly in the address bar.

Location and License
You must be in the UK to watch BBC iPlayer. The service checks your IP address. If you are on holiday outside the UK it blocks you. You see a message saying the content is not available in your location.
You also need a TV License. The law requires this to watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer. When you register or sign in the system asks you to confirm you have one. You simply click yes to proceed. The system does not ask for your license number during sign in. It operates on a trust system at that stage.
Managing Your Devices
You can see all devices connected to your account. Go to your BBC account settings on a web browser. It lists every phone, tablet, and TV you used. If you sell a TV or lose a phone you remove it from this list. This signs that device out remotely. It keeps your account secure.
