With a revised set list, Taylor Swift began the European leg of her historic Eras tour in France.
In order to feature music from her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, the celebrity cut a number of tracks and rearranged the performance.
New tracks, such as Fortnight and Down Bad, replaced fan favorites, like The Archer and The 1.
The actress also made a number of fashion debuts, such as a sparkling red bodysuit for the show’s opening segment and a black dress with silver tassels for the Fearless era.
Taylor Swift performed as Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince on stage at La Défense Arena in Paris just after 8 p.m. local time. She then gave a flirtatious “enchanté” greeting to the sold-out audience.
The “most beautiful, romantic city in the world” was the perfect place to start the European portion of her tour, she continued, adding that she felt “incredibly lucky.”
The 34-year-old sang 45 songs from her 18-year career during her more than three hours on stage, which ended just after 11 p.m.
The tour has separate sets devoted to each of her 11 studio albums, with a concept centered upon the various “eras” she’s produced over that period.
Last year, it began in America, where followers’ dancing sparked economic growth and seismic activity in the communities.
Swift performed live for the first time in Paris following the release of her 31-track double album, The Tortured Poets Department, three weeks prior.
It received mixed reviews, but in its first week of sales, it shattered multiple sales records.
Condensed the sister albums Folklore and Evermore (both recorded during the Covid epidemic) into a single “Folkmore” chapter in order to make room for the new material.
Soon after the opulent stadium concert started, many noticed that everything had changed. The intro music now featured excerpts from The Tortured Poets Department.
However, The Archer’s cancellation fifteen minutes into the performance was the first concrete indication. In past legs, it was customarily the sixth song on the lineup.
Swift then pulled off another surprise by relocating the segment centered on her Red album to an earlier segment of the program.
The celebrity was sporting a t-shirt that read, “This is not Taylor’s version,” throughout those songs, which was a reference to the current effort to re-record her first six albums.
Swift donned a voluminous cream ball gown to perform the Tortured Poets Department material, and the on-stage graphics took on a fresh black-and-white aesthetic.
She made an appearance in the tractor beam of a UFO for the melancholy ballad Down Bad, alluding to the first line of the song, “Did you really beam me up / In a cloud of sparkling dust / Just to do experiments on?”
The breakup of two relationships—with British actor Joe Alwyn and lead singer of The 1975, Matty Healy—is a major theme of the new album.
Taylor Swift referred to this segment of the performance as “female rage, the musical” in jest on stage.
Swift concluded the performance with the popular song Karma. The last part of the act, which focused on the ethereal pop of 2022’s Midnights album, remained unaltered.
The pop star’s tour has taken on a level of cultural significance not seen since the 1980s concerts of Madonna and Michael Jackson.
Taylor Swift has 152 stadium dates scheduled until December 2024.
Tickets are expected to sell for $1.4 billion (£1.1 billion) when she finishes, making it the most successful tour ever, exceeding the $939 million (£750 million) earned by Elton John on his multiyear farewell tour.
On June 7, the tour will make its way to the UK, stopping in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and London.
